King / Obama - Sweet Potato Pie and Pecan Soup Lenses

Judge Tanya Bransford The
not known, like his parents, segregated schools. She remembers as if it were yesterday, when she learned the death of Dr. King. She was in elementary school, and it was the birthday of her best friend. Tanya Bransford is a child of Dreams, "A Child of the Dream, the Dream of Martin Luther King, Jr. If she was lucky not to suffer as much as her parents, but experienced racism and discrimination as they always do part of life. Yesterday, "Martin Luther King Day, a holiday in the U.S., Tanya Bransford was asked to pay tribute to Dr. King. I went to listen to the Edina Library, in metropolitan Minneapolis. In a speech enriched Gospel, she told us about the American dream, and because he was asked, his experience with racism as a black American, as a woman, as a young and brilliant law student, and even later as a lawyer. I never heard not even a hint of bitterness in his voice. Instead, she spoke with great decline, convinced that we won victories over racism every day. It is, itself, proof that America can achieve anything as long to believe, to empower and persevere to achieve his goal. It is an example of the American dream, as the man who will kiss the Presidency of the United States in a few hours.

The moment is historic, unique. Today, Martin Luther King would have turned 80 and today proudly inaugurates America its first Black American President, Barack Obama, also "a child of the Dream." Today, a huge barrier will collapse, the ice will break, and thanks to the passion and talent that animate Barack Obama, with hope and energy that diffuses, America feels ready to live the American dream, that of Martin Luther King, without discrimination.

Today, America finally closing a chapter of its history and began a new one.

Good Luck, Mr. President !

Sweet Potato Pie and Pecan

To celebrate the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. and the inauguration of President Barack Obama, I chose a dessert tradition Soul Food: the Pecan Pie. This classic cuisine of the southern United States is much too sweet for my taste normally, but this modern version (and "corn syrup"), suffered a twist of a chef in the Midwest, here , Minnesota: under the crunch of pecans and caramel flavored with vanilla, honey and maple syrup, lies a thick layer of sweet potato, really any sweet-smelling cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. It is an excellent recipe Cafe Brenda, Minneapolis . Smell, taste, it is a glory of America!

Ingredients for a cake of 23 cm or 9 inches:

For the dough (recipe for 2 pie crusts, for one batter, divide the amount by two, or freeze a pie shell for later) :
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, or 115 g
- 2 tbsp margarine, or 30 g
- 3 / 4 teaspoon of salt
- 1 cup of flour or 140 g
- 1 cup wholemeal flour, or 140 g
- 8 9 tbsp ice water

For the syrup pecan:
- 1 and 1 / 2 tbsp butter (20 g), melted
- 1 / 2 cup honey, or 120 ml
- 1 / 2 cup maple syrup, or 120 ml
-
2 eggs - 1 teaspoon of vanilla flavoring
- 1 pinch of salt

Prick sweet potatoes with a fork and bake in microwave or in hot oven wrapped in foil, for 20 to 30 minutes.

A pie plate 9 inches or 23 cm in diameter, on top.

Method:

Dough: Pour
flour and salt in a mixing bowl. Add the cold butter, grated or cut into small pieces. Mix by cutting the butter into the dough (Using 2 knives for example), until the consistency of a "crumble". Add ice water gradually. To begin, mix with a fork, then when the consistency is neither too dry nor too wet, gather into a ball by hand. Divide into 2, flatten into disks and refrigerate for at least half an hour wrapped in plastic wrap.

syrup pecan:
Mix all ingredients except nuts, very well with a whisk. Add nuts.

The mashed sweet potatoes:
Mix all ingredients with a whisk.

Preheat oven to 350 F or 175 C. Butter a pie pan with high edges of 9 inches or 23 cm in diameter.

Roll out the dough until you have a circle of about 30 cm (11 inches). Spread in pan. Wrap the edges of the dough outward.

Pour the sweet potato puree on the pastry, then the syrup to nuts.

Bake 1 hour and 20 to 30 minutes, or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean.
