The "Shortbread Cookies" Michelle Obama

The magazine for parents, "Family Circle", launched for the first time in 1992, a competition between the wives of cookies candidates for President of the United States. The idea, according to the magazine, is interested in elections in a playful manner. Can you imagine a little like Hillary Clinton had to jump for joy at the thought of rubbing shoulders with Mrs. Bush in a contest of cookies in 1992 and again in 1996, Mrs. Dole cons! And as cookies are, unlike the competition, a very serious matter to the United States, the choice of spouses of candidates may soon become a real political issue. Will not believe, therefore, that these potential First Ladies of the United States unveiled an authentic family recipe-ree-do of their husbands and children, nor Hillary Clinton has tested his recipe in the joy and good mood before offering to vote! Until

chocolate cookies have always won the competition, and coincidentally, the wife winning this game proved to be the First Lady. Except this time. Neither contained any chocolate recipes, and the husband of the winner, Mr. McCain was not elected President.

Until then, I was not interested in the contest (like the vast majority Americans, let us not worry!), until my friend Claudia (delicious and spicy sparkling Blog Kitchen Raspberry ) my intention to publish the cookies Mrs. Obama, as a continuation of my post about First Lady . Criticism and praise inflamed readers of the magazine "Family Circle" which tested the cookies, and voted (often partisan, it goes without saying), I have stopped trying. I needed to know ...

Michelle Obama's Shortbread Cookies

The original recipe is on this site (click)

Ingredients for 12 to 18 cookies (the number of cookies depends on the thickness of the dough and the cookies chosen width, this amount represents only half the original recipe):

my changes stand out clearly in italics : I used regular flour, the flavor of bitter almonds in place of the amaretto, pumpkin seeds, cranberries and almonds and chips for garnish and demerara sugar instead of regular sugar to give them shine and golden.

- 3 / 4 stick of softened butter or 165 g
- 3 / 4 cup + 1 tablespoon of sugar or 125 grams of sugar
- 1 egg (yolk and white separate)
- 1 / 2 teaspoon almond + 1 and 1 / 2 teaspoon water or 1 tablespoon amaretto
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest (or 1 / 2 teaspoon)
- 1 teaspoon orange zest (or 1 / 2 teaspoon)
- 1 ½ cups or 210 g of flour (the recipe recommends use of a special pastry flour, but I preferred him to the flour)
- 1 pinch of salt
- dry and dried fruit (optional), such as pumpkin seeds, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, cranberries, cherries or raisins, dried apricots or mango ...
- a few pinches of sugar demerara

Method:

Preheat oven to 325 F or 160 C.

In mixer bowl, beat butter and sugar until the mixture is creamy and light. Add egg yolk and the lemon zest, bitter almond flavor and water. Exchanging the whip against the K beater, and add the flour and salt. Mix until dough almost comes together into a ball around the drummer, nothing more. If ultimately it seems too dry, add half a teaspoon of water at time, no more.

Roll dough on a shortbread pan or plate lined with parchment paper lightly floured uniform manner well, using a roll lightly floured too. I got a square about 25 cm square.

Brush beaten egg white and sprinkle with a mixture of dried fruits and dried fruits, and finally, a few pinches of sugar demerara.

Bake 25 minutes or until the shortbread is lightly browned. Turn off the oven and leave cake another 15 minutes, door slightly open.

Cut into squares when removed from the oven. Cool on a rack .

presidential These cookies are elegant, sophisticated even a little, but fast and childishly simple to achieve. Their wealth into butter and dried fruits and their colors red, green and gold to fall into the category of Christmas cookies . The peel of citrus are more discreet than I imagined, but it's perfect! From the standpoint of taste, I would have regretted if I had divided the amount by two as the rest of the recipe. From general point of view, the whole family really regret I have not sold more widely in my unwise, gluttony, and that I have prepared only half the recipe because it's a great cookie to make with children, especially when approaching Christmas.

Enjoy!

Enjoy once again with the added bonus of the weekend. Remember
, and 8 years later ... Budweiser, Wassup? , a nod to the Obama campaign 08.
